Wes on The Scorch Trials

With The Scorch Trials images and more slowly starting to release, Wes Ball talks with Empire Magazine about making the film.

On The Scorch:
It's definitely a cool world, kind of ravaged by the sun, so everything's kind of burned and that's why it's called The Scorch. But it's also full of very hostile people, including creatures they have to meet up and deal with. What was kind of appealing to me was that it didn't have to be a rehash of the first film, we got to go into a completely different look, a different kind of environment, and different threats altogether, but to still tell the story of these characters we fell in love with from the first movie.

On the filming process:
Obviously certain parts of it were easier this time, which was fun. But in terms of scope, it's huge. I saw it as the Empire Strikes Back of this three- movie series and there are a ton of locations and a lot of action that happens, and it's that middle instalment of that three story arc, especially the way it starts, because we're thrown into the action and right where the last one left off with these kids in a helicopter and they go off to the next thing in a dramatic way. It's exciting to just jump into this thing.

On the adaptation process:
We didn't approach this as a straight adaptation of the second book, we approached it more as using the same ingredients but using slightly different recipe. So things from the first book end up in the second movie and there are things in the second book we're saving for a third movie.

On his future involvement with the series:
We'll see. I don’t want to say anything yet! I wasn't planning on making the second movie right away, but I couldn't deny wanting to work with this cast again and keep making the story. I'll be involved forever, and feel like I should be a custodian, whether I direct the next one or not.

Dylan on TST Changes, Post-Wrapping Thoughts

While at Teen Wolf's PaleyFest Panel, Dylan talked briefly about The Scorch Trials.

On book to film changes:
We strayed a little from the book, so I hope [the fans] are cool with that because we still have plenty of stuff from the book in there.

On his performance:
I walked away every day proud. That's all I can worry about. I can't worry if the movie is good too.

Post-filming thoughts:
We just wrapped shooting a month ago. They've only been cutting it for that long, so I haven't seen it. I think it's great though. I feel like we accomplished something every day. I just have to be happy with the experience, and I am, so that's the icing on the cake.

First Look at The Scorch Trials

The Scorch Trials promo is heating up. Here are the stills released so far.

Wyck on The Scorch Trials:
The first movie was the mystery of ‘Where are we and what is this place? And can we get out?’ But the second movie is about the repercussions of getting out and the discovery of what the world is actually like.

Wes on the solar flare:
It has transformed the world into a desert with sand dunes that crawl and are swallowing the ruins of a lost world.

Wes on the Cranks:
We don’t want to call them zombies, but they fit into that category. They’re not undead, but they are rage-filled.

We're thrilled with the sneak peeks of key scenes/characters and the style of the stills so far! Which one is your favorite?

T. S. Nowlin Will Script The Death Cure

In super exciting news, T. S. Nowlin is on board to script Maze Runner: The Death Cure, completing his work on the trilogy.

Nowlin returns after co-writing The Maze Runner with Noah Oppenheim and Grant Pierce Myers, and solely writing Scorch Trials

We are for a really excited about Nowlin's continued involvement for a variety of reasons: it's clear that he truly cares about the integrity of the story and does what it takes to adapt the essence of it to the film medium in the most realistic ways possible, works well with director Wes Ball to continue this grounded mindset, and lastly, continuity is key! Having the same writer for the whole trilogy is uncommon, especially in YA adaptations, but nonetheless we are grateful Nowlin's committed to the world until the end.
